Although the Berlin Iron Bridge Company shop was equipped with electric lights, it was useful to have as much natural light as possible. Because the shop was iron-framed, the exterior walls did not have to be load-bearing. The lower parts of the walls were made of brick, but the entire upper half was made of glass, thus providing the maximum amount of light for the interior of the shop.
