Roof Trusses

The Berlin Iron Bridge Company also produced structural ironwork for buildings, including iron-framed foundries, machine shops, and factories throughout the eastern United States. This type of building, the same type as the company's own ca. 1890 shop, was in increasing demand because of the flexible interior space and exceptional natural light made possible by a skylight along the roof and large wall windows (the walls of iron-framed buildings were non-loadbearing, so they could have as much glass as needed). Roof trusses such as those being made here minimized the number of interior columns and so made the space more useable.
