Narrow-Gauge Railroad Tracks
The Berlin Iron Bridge Company's shop was equipped with a system of narrow-gauge tracks for moving material around. Three sets of tracks ran the entire length of the shop, with a fourth partial track. Components were loaded onto small flat cars and pushed along the tracks to the next station. Cars could be shifted between tracks by means of transfer tables located outside the ends of the shop.
In order to facilitate the movement of material from standard-gauge cars (used for shipping on the adjacent railroad sidings), the narrow gauge system had exterior tracks along the sides of the building, and one section of track within the shop was dual-gauge.
